Filming of the documentary The Bells of Rus continues.
Filming in Voronezh for The Bells of Rus project has been completed.

The crew spent a whole week at the Vera bell foundry, a leading Russian manufacturer of unique bells. The team followed the entire process of creating a bell: from design and modelling to firing and casting.

Huge 50-ton furnaces give birth to masterpieces of the bell maker’s art, which are then sent to monasteries, churches and parishes all over Russia and beyond. Vera bells ring in countries near and far: Belarus, Poland, Canada, Japan, Greece, Finland, Korea, the USA, England, Montenegro, Serbia and Germany.

The foundry’s director, Valery Anisimov, a hereditary founder, is proud of his creations. He managed to restore the unique profile of the Russian bell from 18th-century examples, since the records and drawings of the old masters have not survived. His bells have found a home in landmark places in Russia — in the chimes of the Spasskaya Tower of the Moscow Kremlin, in the Solovetsky Monastery and in the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg.

The return of the “Harvard bells” to Russia is also thanks to Valery Anisimov. The bells were taken out of the USSR in the late 1920s and survived in the USA through the “time of troubles” when Orthodoxy was persecuted in our country. After perestroika, Anisimov’s foundry cast copies of these bells, which were exchanged for the originals. Today the “Harvard bells” ring at the Danilov Monastery in Moscow. Who rings them now, and how, we will tell you in our next stories.
