The April frost did not stop a constellation of three outstanding figures of Russian culture from ascending to the highest point of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow — its belfry.
Greeting Krasnaya Gorka, or Antipascha, on a hilltop or in a church is an old folk tradition. The guide to the belfry was Igor Konovalov, senior bell ringer of the Moscow Kremlin cathedrals and the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.
“In Russia a bell has always been more than a bell. It embodied the anthem, the coat of arms and the Soul,” noted Igor Konovalov.
His fascinating talk about bells ended with a “master class” for Dina Korzun, a stage and screen actress, and Alexei Romanov, leader of the band Voskreseniye. Dina and Alexei had this rare chance to ring the bells of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour during the filming of the documentary series The Bells of Rus, which the Social Investments Agency continues to produce with the support of the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives.
