“Chekhov ForeVer”

A cultural and educational project inspired by the life and works of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov.
A documentary about the 1890 journey of the Russian literary classic Anton Chekhov to the islands of Sakhalin and Ceylon. Running time 89 min.
The project was supported by the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives (PFCI).
In our film we take Chekhov “out of his case”. We reveal him not only as a writer but also as a “civic activist”. His unparalleled work Sakhalin Island shook thinking Russia and led to a real reform of the country’s penal system. The main theme of the film is what Sakhalin came to mean for Chekhov and Chekhov for Sakhalin, and how the journey affected him as a person and as a writer. The focus is on his census work, his conversations with convicts and wardens, and his study of the lives of settlers — women and men — indigenous peoples and officials. The film features People’s Artist of Russia Boris Shcherbakov.
